Manhattan to Hamptons

The standard we keep.

A short standard for a small almanac. It binds the publisher, Montauk Highway Press, and is revised openly.

Independence

We take no money from any operator, ferry line, airline, rail authority or car service named on this site. No fare is quoted in exchange for payment; no passage is ranked, recommended or omitted for commercial reasons. The almanac's only loyalty is to the traveller trying to choose.

Sourcing

Distances and routes come from public routing data; fares from operators' published rates and typical seasonal quotes; schedules from the operators' own timetables. Where a figure is an estimate — which is most of them — we say so and show our working in the method.

Naming operators

We name real operators so the entries are useful, and we link to none of them. A named operator is a fact about the route, not an advertisement, and a reader should be able to verify it without being funnelled anywhere.

What we will not publish

We will not invent a fare, a schedule or an operator. We will not present a single operator's marketing as neutral fact. We will not publish a figure we cannot source, and we will not leave a known error standing.

Corrections

When something is wrong, we fix it in place and record the change in the corrections log with the date and what changed. Material corrections are never silently overwritten.

Automation

The maps and ledgers are generated from a structured dataset, which is reviewed by a person each season. Prose is written and checked by people; nothing is published unread.
